I have been gone for a few weeks and sometimes you just gotta sit back and smell the roses. Yes this metaphor is true for my life right now, too much going and doing and not enough relaxing and just being still in the moment – roses are in bloom for so long and you got to enjoy them while they are here. I am talking metaphorically about roses – I know they are long gone, but the rose can be anything. Perhaps it is my daughter growing up so fast and heading to school next September, sometimes I just have to let her give me a lesson in how to not take life so seriously! My dogs that absolutely LOVE spending time with me and sometimes I forgot how good it feels just to stroke their heads and absorb some of that positive energy that just pours out of a dog, they have been scientifically proved to reduce stress and lower blood pressure.

I took two weeks off doing everything, except ALL those everyday chores that a mother needs to do when working from home, then my internet was down and the midterm was upon me. I have enjoyed the break, my mind is not as “busy” as it was and I now see clearer in my direction forward both in my personal and career journey. It is a good feeling and I would urge anyone to find that clarity and just for a while “sit back and smell the roses” the old sayings are the best!!!

This picture was taken at Tucked Away Cottage in The Yorkshire Dales – an amazing B&B with spectacular English country gardens.

the blog awards shortlist

I am delighted and thrilled to have my blog make it onto the Blog Awards Ireland 2013 – Short List.

It is a lot of work maintaining a blog, similar to a small child, without the mess, but with the constant love and attention a small child needs to grow and flourish! Not only has my blog made it through in the Eco/Green category but also I have been nominated in the Lifestyle and Outdoors category! Yay, I just feel a little validated that yes people do like to read what I write. There was a time (during school) when I would just black out with the pressure of a class room, it was all too much and things just really didn’t make sense. I would have rather spent my time in my Dad’s shed building things and caring for all my animals. But, I got there in my own time and from my own struggles I have learned so much about the way children learn and why they are SOOO important in changing the future of our planet. This is why I am gunning for my dream of becoming a really great children’s author, specialising in teaching about the subjects that I feel I have a really deep and personal understanding – The Earth, Environment, Nature and Animals. I know I can have an effect on the parents that read the books too, it’s two for the price of one!

Looking forward to seeing what the future holds and if I make it to the ‘Final List’ – Oh the excitement…

If you are a regular reader, you will have already read about my love affair with The Honest Company. An American company co founded by the stunning Jessica Alba – in a quest to give her children really honest and pure everyday personal and home cleaning products. I recently came across a section on their website called “What’s Inside” and it gives a really simple and graphically pleasing account of exactly the information we need as consumers, to make an informed decision about the products we use.

So in this graphic The Honest Company talks us through Conventional Baby Bath Products!!

What's inside conventional baby bath products?

This is a little topical right now, as reports in the media lately suggest that food supplements are just a ploy by organisations to fool you out of money. I do agree there are a large number of supplements available that contain a fraction of what it says on the tin! I recently started on an Organic, Vegetable based multi vitamin to keep a pep in my step and I am taking the Solgar range. The Solgar brand couldn’t have come more highly recommended by my Aunt, who is a nurse, with years of experience and lots of courses under her belt in eating organically and the teachings of British nutritionist Patrick Halford.

The Honest Companies – “What’s Inside” information section on their site contained an excellent graphical explanation on Food Supplements.

Jessica Alba is not only beautiful but she is also smart. Setting up The Honest Company to give herself and her daughters the most natural beauty, baby and cleaning products for all the families needs.
There is a section on The Honest Company website called “What’s Inside”. An in-depth look at the ingredients and the harmful environmental and health benefits of everyday items that are used by millions of consumers and have a huge profitability attached – hence the attraction for corporations!
The everyday items that are put under the What’s Inside Spot Light include:
  1. Disposable Diapers/nappies
  2. All Purpose Cleaners
  3. Baby Bath Products
  4. Health & Wellness
It is refreshing but also quite scary to be able to read exactly What’s Inside Disposable Diapers, and here it is and its not pretty:

Paperless post

So, I recently had a few invitations for weddings that were sent by Paperless Post – ‘sending the web’s most beautiful invitations and cards’. I thought how clever and environmentally friendly this option is! The only down side I would think if you were sending paperless post to a large wedding guest list you would need to have everyone of the techno age?!

I know first hand how much time, effort and cost goes into the “paper” version of an invitation not alone the raw materials involved in the manufacture. I got married on New Year’s Eve and it is only now 7months on that I am sending out the Thank You cards – they are post cards I will add to save on envelopes. So the next time I want to send out an invitation or a card I will definitely save my time, money and some tree’s along the way and I will call on Paperless Post to send my thoughtful messages or just simply brighten up some ones day.

Happy Birthday

clothnappies

When I became pregnant on my first baby over 4 years ago now – without hesitation I decided I wanted to use cloth nappies! At the time I was living in a basement apartment that didn’t have great washing line facilities and I knew one of the main things for cloth nappies was the benefit of wind drying otherwise the benefits of using them in the first place would be greatly reduced if I had to go down the tumble drier route.

With statistics such as in the UK alone each year there are over 3 BILLION nappies ending up in ladfill taking between 50-100 years to breakdown – never decomposing just getting broken down into smaller bits! Scary thought isn’t it, and the length of time is longer when you wrap the nappies in non biodegradable plastic bags.

When I did go about having a look at cloth nappies I got a sample from a company called – Little Comfort – they made nappies from bamboo. All I can remember is the negative reactions from everyone that I suggested it to – it was so extraordinary that people had such an aversion to something so simple and environmentally friendly. Well I have made up my mind that if I have another, and please God I will,  I definitely will be using the cloth version without doubt – I have my washing line in place and even in the 4 years since I researched the quality and advancement in the cloth nappies has been amazing.

I am starting My Waste Free Home next Monday 1st of July where all my waste will be processed on-site/at my home sending nothing to landfill, using a Hot composter and a Pet Pooh Loo. For the mums who are interested in the concept of My Waste Free Home but would struggle with the problem of disposing of lots of dirty nappies on a weekly basis, cloth nappies would solve all of these problems. It may sound crazy but one of my favourite green companies in the world – TerraCycle actually have developed the method of recycling disposable nappies!! Check out more about it here.
