The Honest Company – “What’s Inside” Food Supplements?!

This is a little topical right now, as reports in the media lately suggest that food supplements are just a ploy by organisations to fool you out of money. I do agree there are a large number of supplements available that contain a fraction of what it says on the tin! I recently started on an Organic, Vegetable based multi vitamin to keep a pep in my step and I am taking the Solgar range. The Solgar brand couldn’t have come more highly recommended by my Aunt, who is a nurse, with years of experience and lots of courses under her belt in eating organically and the teachings of British nutritionist Patrick Halford.

The Honest Companies – “What’s Inside” information section on their site contained an excellent graphical explanation on Food Supplements.

  1. Best Lifestyle Blog
  2. Best Science & Education Blog
  3. Best Newcomer Blog
  4. & of course Best Green Blog!

I am of course a very proud momma this morning, I love my blog and hope it becomes what I know it can be…Great!

Breast Feeding happens in other mammal species too – unlike us they can deal with it in public!

Mammals are characterised by feeding their offspring with their own milk produced my special mammary glands. In female humans these glands are our BOOBS, BREASTS, BOSOMS, what ever you want to call them. Human ladies have them and they are particularly useful for those who choose to feed their babies with them.

SO AS A FEMALE HUMAN:

  • We are part of the Mammal species which are classified by having the function of producing milk
  • Look at these cute pictures of other Mammals doing a great job fulfilling something they were born to do

mare&foal

dog&puppies

cow&calf

I am sure you had no problems looking at the pictures of other mammals feeding their young above as it is “normal”. So why when some humans choose to breast feed, some people would rather jump out of the moving bus that you are all sitting in rather than catch a glimpse of you feed your baby? Is this picture not “Normal”???

Look at how stunning Miranda Kerr is feeding her new-born and read all about her breastfeeding experience Here.

Please note: I am a mother who know’s just how tricky the whole experience can be. Sometimes desires to breast-feed cannot be fulfilled. I only ever advocate that a relaxed, healthy and happy mum is more beneficial to her baby, regardless of what method of feeding she chooses. But I also advocate that if breast is chosen then it should be welcomed and respected the same as bottles etc. There are enough things to have to worry about and deal with as a mother, more particularly a new mother, than some one making you feel uncomfortable or ashamed of your desire to breast-feed or not too.

My Gym that costs FRESH AIR!!

photo-62

I love to exercise burning off calories that will allow me to scoff something yummy like bread, cheese, dark dark chocolate, a glass of red wine, and other ‘a minute on the hips a lifetime on the hips’ sort a food. But what I don’t like is the idea of paying big bucks to use an electricity guzzling gym. I do love gyms and every time I stay in a hotel I use the gym quite regularly, but there are so many other alternatives that we can look into that could help society as well as the earth.

TGO Green HeartCan you imagine if Ireland started an initiative to set up GREEN GYMS in public lands that could generate electricity on site to power lights etc? What an amazing gym that would be and you need not worry about the weather as a tarpaulin tent like structure is all you would need to protect from the guarantee that is rain in so many shapes and sizes.

I have seen some very simple green gyms around the country like cross trainers and the likes but The Great Outdoor Gym Company has already accomplished my idea of an eco gym with their Green Heart  amazing results! It is something I will definitely have to look into and send onto my local county council as this would be amazing in every park around the world let alone my local area.

For now my gym consists of a pair of trainers, a high visibility vest (a must for Irish wet winters!) and my two eager hounds that would climb any mountain with me like we did on Sunday  in the snow! There is nothing like fresh air in your lungs as apposed to recycled air-conditioned sweaty feet, arse air that has been around the gym God knows how many times….!

A Claire Lewis Product Review – My personal favorite Liquid Hand Wash.

ecover-lavender-aloe-vera-hand-soap-250Ml

I always had a thing for a bar of soap it seemed more environmentally friendly to me and I preferred the smell of soap washed hands. Even in the shower a bar is soap is always at hand and hubby likes soap over the millions of shower gels that are on the market. There are so many reasons to chose a bar of soap…well that was until I visited my local vegetarian/health-food store/cafe The very charming very lovely The Happy Pear in Greystones, where I washed my hands using a brand they sold in the store and used in their loo.

ECOVER Lavender & Aloe vera Hand wash. I was instantly transported to a sunny back yard with glass of wine in hand, sun on my face with the sound of buzzing bees and children playing. The smell of the natural essential oil of Lavender is so relaxing. A truly amazing experience so amazing that I had to purchase a bottle on the way home. I also have eczema on my knuckes of my right hand – it is my portable Litmus Test!! It gives me an instant indication to how harsh a product is ECOVER passed my eczema knuckle test with flying colours 🙂

Don’t be such a Lemon – Just Drink one a day!

lemonwater

The truth be told I have no idea why when people use the term “don’t be a lemon” or “don’t stand about like a lemon” why these terms are used in negative connotation. The Lemon is a fruit bursting with so much goodness it should have nothing but positivity associated with it. The fresh citrus smell the bright yellow summer colour – mmmm, I am getting a lift just thinking about it.

The cleaning properties of the humble lemon are clear enough and I think most people know that if you want to clean a filthy oven you need a lemon and some baking soda. It not only cuts through the burnt dried on foods but it smells so good and you will not have respiratory problems afterwards like you would experience when using toxic chemical alternatives that cost a heck more than the price of a lemon!

But it is the HEALTH BENEFITS of Lemons that I want to highlight, I feel that not everyone is aware of how truly amazing the Lemon is. If there is one thing you add to your daily routine that is to start the day with a glass of lemon water preferably warm water but cold is ok too. This drink boosts your immune system and kick starts your metabolism. Lemon helps your skin remain clear and plump as it removes toxins from your body as you know the first sign of a clean inside is your glowing skin!

Lemons are good for digestion and is an excellent Liver tonic helping you digest your food by boosting your livers functionality increasing the production of bile. These are the yucky bits, lemon also reduced the production of phlegm (I gag when I read, write or hear that word).  Lemon is a diuretic (which makes you pee more) like coffee but when you mix coffee and lemons it can help eliminate headaches, try it some time it works! If you have a kidney infection lots of warm water with lots of lemon will help you flush the toxins and bacteria from your urinary tract, but you have to hit the first signs of a UTI hard. Many people who get regular UTI will know what I am talking about.

Lemons we all know contain a high volume of Vitamin C so it is good for treating infections and can help with tonsillitis and sore throats. So the saying “A Lemon A Day Keeps The Doctor Away” is what I think should roll off our tongue. The smell of a lemon is what gets me all excited and don’t get me started on lemon curd jam!! Yum.

The Mighty Wheatgrass….Popeye stuff!

Popeye1

Ever wonder about Wheatgrass, what is was and what it can do for you…well wonder no more, I will let you in on everything you need to know about WHEATGRASS!

It is grown from the common wheat plant, more specifically the cotyledons of the common wheat plant. The cotyledons are a significant part of the embryo within the seeds of the plant.

The health benefits of wheatgrass has been highlighted more recently because of our ever increasing desire to become healthy with a very convenient quick fix shot, like that of wheatgrass and also the rise of juice bars! Wheatgrass is juiced fresh or you can purchase tablet form. The fresh pressed juice is the more desirable form.

It provides chlorophyllamino acidsmineralsvitamins, and enzymes.

Chlorophyll: If you want more energy, supplement with chlorophyll! As Dr Janet Star Hull always says: ‘what works in nature, surely works in man’.

Amino Acids:  builds and repair cells and tissue, carry oxygen and are part of the enzyme system. There are also many other body functions they perform, including regulating every biochemical reaction.

In the 1930’s  Charles F. Schnabel began experimenting with wheatgrass in the hopes of increasing its popularity. He carried out experiments on hens that were dying and his results were startling. Not only did the hen’s recover but their egg production and quality became superior to those other hens not included in the experiment.

There are ranging health benefits to wheatgrass that range from detoxification, aids digestion and blood flow and also has been trailed as a placebo in breast cancer research. All I know is from researching this little green plant it seems to have a lot of bang for its buck!!

My local vendor of Wheatgrass is The Happy Pear in Greystones – they have an online store and sell a really affordable wheatgrass juicer for €35. Check it out here

I am sure your local health food store will be able to assist your every wheatgrass need if you go in and ask for a little. Wheatgrass gives you strength is the new buzz word, never mind the Guinness!!
